Heritage Grants
From the growth of the worldwide telegraph network in the 19th century to the modern mobile phone, the gallery explores the huge impact of developments in communication technology on our lives today.
More than 800 unique objects from the Science Museum collections and interactive displays bring to life the personal stories of those whose lives were changed by each new wave of technology.
The project involved creating new spaces in the gallery; a dedicated learning programme; workshops; and performances.
The gallery also introduced a variety of multi-sensory resources, including BSL video and tactile information boards. These were created specifically for this gallery with the help of an advisory panel of blind and partially sighted individuals who worked in consultation with Science Museum staff. A new app was also developed, featuring four creative challenges to help visitors get more from their visits.
This landmark project for the museum was made possible by generous support from funders, including a £6.3million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
