Heritage Grants
Holy Cross Church was built by the Passionist Order in 1902, on the Crumlin Road in Ardoyne, North Belfast. The church is highly significant to the area, and its copper-roofed towers make it a distinctive local landmark.
The building is Grade B+ listed, but had been in need of essential repairs to ensure its longevity. This project addressed the legacy of a fire bomb attack in 1972, serious water ingress to the roof, stone decay and damage to the historic artwork that it housed.
Repairs were carried out to areas of the church including the roof, guttering, pews, heating and flooring. The work also removed inappropriate past alterations to the building.
The restoration of Holy Cross was the first in a series of regeneration projects undertaken on the site by the church, designed to benefit the local community living in an area of high economic deprivation.
The members of the congregation were also able to share the knowledge they gained from the refurbishment process with other Passionists in Ireland.
