“I have gained confidence because I was so used to being out of education that I haven’t been doing anything productive or meeting any new people in a long time, but now I’ve done it.”
Young people worked in teams to create new interpretation, helping shape the way visitors engage with the Richmond Borough Art Collection in the future.
Orleans House Gallery worked in partnership with local authority Children’s Services, including the youth offending team. They referred young people to the project, many of whom were not in employment, education or training (NEET).
Young people engaged in a variety of ways:
- as long-term volunteers
- taking part in week-long work skills placements
- through creative interpretation projects, testing out interpretation strategies for the collection
Founded in 1962, the Borough Art Collection has over 3,000 paintings and other objects spanning the early 18th century to the present day. The young people carried out research, devised exhibitions and developed new digital interpretation.
A Creative Apprentice supported the participants, while working to attain a Level 3 NVQ in Cultural and Heritage Venue Operations. The young participants used their involvement to gain accredited outcomes through the Arts Award.
