The Hastings local community came together to help restore and transform the historic Hastings Pier.

Thanks to the efforts of the Hastings Pier Charity, the 142-year-old Grade II listed Hastings Pier has been returned to its former glory as a focus for tourism, events and entertainment in the South Coast resort.

Architects dRMM worked with the charity to restore the pier, which had been badly damaged by fire. Capital works on the project repaired the pier’s below-deck structure, and constructed a new visitor centre, housing a people’s archive and display space for the area’s rich local heritage.

Carole Souter, former Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are full of admiration for Hastings Pier Charity and its successful campaign to ensure a much-loved landmark is saved and restored to its rightful place at the heart of the community. This ambitious project will also create jobs, opportunities for new skills to be mastered and provide the perfect environment for local people to get involved as things progress.”

The pier was reopened to the public in May 2016, and was awarded the Pier of the Year 2017 prize by the National Pier society. The project was also shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2017.
