Heritage Grants
Located five miles north of Sheffield, Greno Woods is a 169 hectare site rich in wildlife and a historic past stretching back over 700 years. The project helped Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust to acquire and consolidate the woodland and conserve the site.
By restoring areas of ancient semi-natural woodland and heathland and by using more traditional grazing and coppicing management methods, the woods are now a thriving resource for local people allowing them to get outdoors and explore nature.
Through a programme of community events such as woodland discovery sessions and guided walks, an education programme and volunteer training in woodland crafts, site stewarding, archaeology and conservation, the local community have discovered the archaeological and ecological history of the area.
Chris Doar, Greno Woods Project Manager at Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, said: “this grant made all the difference in the world. Not only has it helped us to buy the woodland and protect it for the future, it has helped us to bring people here to enjoy it.”
