Young Roots
Green Reflections brought together architectural and natural heritage, with a focus on sites of historical interest and the materials used in their construction.
The project responded to the need for the long-term preservation and enjoyment of historic, significant buildings. It also addressed the lack of people with craft skills in the area, and provided a range of relevant training opportunities.
Lincoln Diocese worked with Hill Holt Wood and Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire to provide a lively, varied and worthwhile experience for young participants.
Diverse groups of young people contributed through numerous workshops on green wood working, lime rendering and stone masonry. They enjoyed many opportunities to access heritage sites and understand how master craftspeople worked. This ambitious, creative project also included volunteer placements with project partners, camping nights, photography, books and public celebration events.
Green Reflections offered accreditation in the form of The Duke of Edinburgh Award and Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN). It supported the personal development of young people of varying abilities, and especially targeted the issue of rural isolation. It successfully promoted heritage skills and identified opportunities for further development. The equipment has also been used in other practical workshops.
