This ambitious project to refurbish the only remaining cable-hauled street tramway in the UK has helped to preserve the heritage attraction for generations to come.

The 100-year-old Great Orme Tramway takes passengers from the Victorian resort of Llandudno up to the 207 metre high summit of Great Orme’s Head. A popular tourist attraction, it’s also regularly used by many locals.

Before the project began, the tramway’s vintage rolling-stock and infrastructure were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and it was thought that, without funding, the tramway would face closure.

The refurbishment project focused on building a reconstruction of the tramway’s dilapidated Half Way Station, where a new covered walkway connects the upper and lower sections of the line. It also included improvements to visitor facilities and essential track repairs.

This project has helped ensure the long-term future of the tramway so that it remains open and safe for future generations.
