First World War: Then and Now
The War Memorial Park in Coedpoeth was created as a result of a letter from a First World War soldier to his parents. The soldier, who died in 1916, told his parents that the best memorial to the war would be a children’s park.
The project involved local community groups, including two local schools. They worked together to conduct research of the names listed on the war memorial, and received training to upload the content onto a website. A bilingual memorial book was also created and an event and exhibition were held to share the work of the project and celebrate the re-opening of the memorial gates after their restoration.
The memorial gates will now be maintained through a volunteer maintenance programme, which was put in place as a result of the project, to ensure their future upkeep.
