The Fire station project will help to regenerate the Sunderland city centre as part of a wider project to create a music, arts and cultural quarter

Found within the Bishopwearmouth Conservation Area, the Sunderland Fire Station project aims to revitalise Sunderland's city centre by bringing the Edwardian building back from the brink and turn it into a thriving building by utilising its historic features to create an atmospheric bar, restaurant, micro brewery, dance studio and theatre space, along with a new exhibition space focusing on fire fighting and the history of the building.

The Old Fire Station project will promote local heritage and knowledge as well as being part of a wider regeneration of the Sunderland city centre. The main aims of the project will be:

  • Restore and refurbish the Fire Station

  • Educating the public in science, engineering and historic heritage found at the Fire Station

  • The establishment of an arts venue which will show public concerts, plays and shows

Built in 1907, the Old Fire Station is currently deteriorating and has over the last 20 years been largely vacant. With help from National Lottery players this project will be part of a new cultural quarter in the Sunderland city centre.
