The Manchester’s Sporting Jews project explored and celebrated the sporting heritage of the Jewish community in Manchester.

The focus of this project was to involve the Jewish community in the research, design and installation of an exhibition exploring the contribution of Jewish people to local sport. As part of the community’s involvement in the exhibition, a group of volunteers was formed to help create a series of themed panels for use as part of the materials on display. In addition to the resources created, more than 60 items were loaned to the museum for use in the exhibition. The museum also strengthened its sporting collections by the addition of more than 190 items including photographs, trophies, brochures and badges.

The exhibition ran for six months from June to December 2012 and welcomed 7,449 visitors. The museum is now in a strengthened position to safeguard the sporting heritage of the Jewish community for future generations.

Manchester Jewish Museum exists to inform, inspire and educate all audiences about Judaism and the history of Manchester’s Jewish community. The museum focuses on collecting, preserving and increasing access to materials relating to Manchester’s Jewish heritage to promote tolerance and understanding by preserving the memory of the Holocaust.
