Sharing Heritage
When there is a network of footpaths but no open space for children and dogs to run freely, a neglected patch of council land can offer an opportunity.
The Friends of Churchfield have repaired a drystone wall, planted trees, shrubs and wildflowers to encourage local wildlife, improve biodiversity and recreate a local valley landscape in miniature. They have improved access while helping people to appreciate and protect the rich diversity of the field. Now, local people are being inspired to try out new ideas in their own garden, encouraging wildlife throughout the village.
Information about the natural and built heritage of Churchfield can be found through onsite interpretation boards and a website is also being developed.
Lorraine Fletcher of the Friends Group said: “We didn't expect the feeling of peace the field has developed. It is our ‘park’ and if we hadn’t taken it on, it probably would have been sold for building and we’d have lost our only green space.”
