A group of young volunteers worked with local people to preserve the heritage of North Tyneside's beach resorts.

Concentrating on Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, the young people recorded memories of what holidays were like over 70 years ago and the important role they played in people’s lives, especially after the Second World War.

As part of the project, young people learnt new media techniques and how to use digital equipment to bring their discoveries together. They then used these as a basis for a series of short animated films. Original photographs and memorabilia were also brought together and curated into a photographic exhibition which was then uploaded onto a website, developed and managed by the volunteers for everyone to use.

The project provided a great opportunity for different sections of society to work together, sharing stories and experiences of the North East’s seaside heritage.

Robin Fry, Volunteer Centre Manager, VODA, said. "We are committed to providing new opportunities for young people to give up their time to benefit others whilst also developing useful skills along the way. The combination of North Tyneside’s rich heritage and passionate young people should result in a fantastic experience for all.”
