Heritage Grants
The Northern Counties Club building sits within the Historic City Conservation Area of Derry/Londonderry, and is a key icon building in that area. It was left vacant from 2006, and had sunk into a state of dereliction which led to its placement on the Buildings at Risk Register Northern Ireland.
This project conserved, refurbished and extended the building into a four-star boutique hotel, now known as the Bishop's Gate Hotel.
The development of this new hotel involved a number of different strands of work, including:
- The demolition of an existing non-original extension
- Implementing like-for like repairs, as well as measures to prevent further decay of original features
- Providing heritage skills training for those working on the project
The finished hotel will give a boost to the local economy, and will provide services such as a bar and restaurant where previously these had not existed. The work on the building also provided training opportunities and work experience placements for the local community.
