A Nottinghamshire community has been encouraged to explore, appreciate and care for local woodland in need of maintenance.

Barker's Wood is located on the corner of Bulwell Hall Park, on the medieval boundaries of Sherwood Forest. It contains a variety of tree and fungi species as well as tawny owls, nuthatches, tree-creepers, green and great spotted woodpeckers and brown hares. 19th century maps also reveal possible connections to Nottingham’s textile industry. The wood is currently overgrown, blocking light to the woodland floor and preventing the growth of tree species and wildflowers. Drainage ditches have also become blocked, causing flooding.

In a project led by Bulwell Community Toy Library and supported by Nottingham City Council, 24 local volunteers have been taking part in clearing paths and undergrowth, erecting fencing and creating wildlife habitats.

The library is adjacent to the park and so the project has been designed with children and families in mind: weekday play schemes, sessions for children and family events will be offered. Facilities and access will be improved with an outdoor classroom and pond-dipping platform. The project seeks to improve the condition and management of the woodland as well as encouraging the local community to enjoy and care for it.
