It was a lucky quirk of fate that Chapeltown missed the 1990s’ housing boom because it meant that the original Victorian and Edwardian buildings were left standing to be ripe for restoration as part of a £802,000 project to inject new life into the area.

The Gothic Parade’s fabulous 19th-century architecture now stands proudly amidst restored frontages and has led to a new vitality in parts of this once run-down area. The wonderfully bright painted villas present visitors and locals with an upbeat, positive picture for the future which will be protected by a new army of trained local builders who will have been taught heritage skills.

Councillor Richard Lewis (Executive Member for Development and the Economy) said: ‘The recently refurbished businesses really showcase the fantastic on-going heritage improvements along Chapeltown Road and continue to enhance the economic vibrancy of the area as a whole. This is such a great opportunity to restore important historic buildings and to celebrate their legacy whilst at the same time continuing to support local businesses now and into the future.”
