Developing a centre of learning within the Chapel of Rest at St Mary’s Church Wreay.

The complex of buildings that includes St Mary's Church and the Chapel of Rest in the village of Wreay, Cumbria is a unique artistic and historical site created in the 1830's and 40's under the personal direction of a local patron, Sarah Losh. Local, national and international interest in Sarah and St Mary's is significant and increasing.

National Lottery Heritage Fund funding will sympathetically repair and refurbish the redundant Chapel of Rest to ensure its long term maintenance and provide an interpretative facility that celebrates the wider legacy of Sarah Losh and the history of Wreay.

The Chapel will be made accessible to all as a centre of learning to record, educate and inspire those from the local community and further afield. Interpretative media, a village heritage trail and educational activities will explain the history and significance of Sarah and her legacy in its context. The project will engage volunteers from the local community to help research and develop the new heritage resources. Throughout the project and beyond the project will engage with the wider community, ensuring that there will be a lasting difference for people as well as heritage.
