Bournemouth Borough Council secured funding to open a new visitor centre in an existing historic thatched barn at the popular Hengistbury Head site in Bournemouth.

The centre has since been awarded the UK Heritage Project of the Year 2014 by the National Federation of Builders.

A site of national and international importance, Hengistbury Head is a popular visitor attraction as a haven of natural heritage, countryside and archaeology. The site and its natural and archaeological heritage are now better interpreted through the centre and its displays and collections.

Collections and archives related to the Schedule Ancient Monument are now on display and in use at the site. Volunteers have developed skills in documenting and researching the archive which will enable the collection to be better managed.

Alongside the conversion of the thatched building, a programme of activities helped a wide range of people learn about the heritage with targeted activities for schools and families. Audio trails, maps, leaflets and guidebooks have been produced.

The official Hengistbury Head website has more information on these developments.
