The Celebrate project will collect memories, stories, photographs and objects in order to explore the heritage of LGBT communities in Cumbria.

OutREACH Cumbria is an organisation focused on promoting social inclusion and respect for LGBT people and their families living, working, studying in and visiting Cumbria. The organisation provides a number of services to enhance the safety and wellbeing of members of the LGBT community.

The Celebrate project focuses on capturing and exploring the LGBT community’s history in Cumbria with particular emphasis on social history and the experiences and memories of those living in the region. The project includes training a group of volunteers in oral history techniques and interviewing skills so that stories can be captured from communities across Cumbria.

The activities are being delivered in partnership with the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and concluded with an exhibition showcasing the oral histories, artefacts and images collected as part of this project.

Historically LGBT heritage, especially in rural areas, has been under explored and this project helped to bring previously invisible histories to light and preserve them for future generations.
