Recording memories before they were lost and preserving valuable social history were just two of the aims of this project, run by Luton Irish Forum.
The project helped to increase understanding about Irish immigrants’ working life in Luton from the 1940s to the 1960s.
Volunteers were recruited and trained in reminiscence work, research and archive management. Schools were involved through workshops and creative activities, and an online community archive was created where people’s stories, photos and documents were shared. The festival of St Patrick, Luton Carnival and the Carnival Mas Camp all joined together to learn techniques in creating costumes and scenery for carnival floats.
Luton gave me a very good living. More so than I would have had in Ireland.
