The Peace Museum has made its collection more accessible in its new permanent home at Salt Mills in Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Previously the 16,000 object collection at The Peace Museum had been in three small galleries, with many items unable to go on display.

Supported through our Dynamic Collections campaign, the project has created an engaging and accessible space enabling more stories of peace, peacemakers, social reform and peace movements to be shared with visitors now and in the future.

An engaging space for all

Visitors from near and far can now see the unique collection made up of banners, personal objects, campaign materials and artworks on display. These include items such as:

  • original banners used at Greenham Common Peace Camp
  • the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s original drawings of the now well-recognised peace symbol

There’s also the opportunity to create protest artwork, encouraging audiences to contribute their own ideas to the space.

On the third floor of Salt Mills, space has also been created for temporary exhibitions, learning and research facilities and a shop, providing a sustainable future.

The museum is also working towards launching an education and events programme, including family-friendly activities, providing opportunities for a wide range of audiences to learn about the histories of peace movements.
