National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
The ground-breaking partnership project between English Heritage, Northumberland County Council, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB), places heritage back in the hands of those it represents.
Empty buildings and spaces across Berwick Barracks will be brought back into use in a way which supports the local economy and ensures the historic site's survival. These spaces will be converted into an exciting new visitor offer featuring a museum, art gallery and archival research centre.
Our funding will also support a programme of community outreach, collections care and organisational resilience. As a result, Berwick Barracks will be an integral part of the town, ensuring that this important landmark will be preserved as a standout visitor destination and community resource.

The Living Barracks project will see the existing exhibitions, gallery and cultural spaces updated, the relocation of the Berwick Archives to the Barracks and the provision of studio spaces for local artists and makers. The Parade Ground will be improved and the remaining empty barracks blocks will be returned to accommodation.
The museum’s design and interpretation will be guided by collaborative engagement with the local community to create an offer that attracts new visitors and captures the true spirit of Berwick.
