Thanks to National Lottery players, Yorkshire is celebrating its sporting heritage with over £120,000 awarded to projects sharing the diverse history of sport in the county.

As Wimbledon and Euro 2016 have drawn to a close, the Tour de France rolls on and the countdown begins to the Rio Olympics, Yorkshire communities can get involved to share their memories and experiences of local sporting heritage.
“Sport and sporting heritage is something that captures local pride and plays a huge role in people’s lives and is an important part of our local heritage.”
From Parks to Pavilions

Yorkshire boasts one of the oldest Asian cricket leagues in the Quaid-e Azam Sunday Cricket League in Bradford. The From Parks to Pavilions project will enable young people to interview the founders of the league and track its impact on the diversity of English cricket as we head into a summer of international cricket against Pakistan.

Our Club, Our Ground, our Past, Our Future

Following Barnsley FC’s momentous start to 2016, the Our Club, Our Ground, our Past, Our Future heritage project will tell the story of the club and its home ground at Oakwell. 2017 marks the 130th anniversary of Barnsley FC as well as 20 years from its historic promotion to the Premier League. In the run-up to this special year volunteers will help develop community exhibition and heritage activities to share the club’s contribution to the local area.

Thrum Hall Thirteen

Yorkshire’s rugby league heritage is well known. Calderdale Community Coaching Trust is looking to celebrate the 13 greatest players to have played at Halifax Rugby League Football Club’s home ground Thrum Hall. They will work with the local community to explore the history of the club, the stories of the players and to vote on the Thrum Hall Thirteen, developing an online archive and education programme.
