A statement on the passing of Lord Jacob Rothschild

The Heritage Fund is saddened to hear of the death of Lord Jacob Rothschild, 87, who was a champion for the UK’s heritage.

He was Chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund in 1994 when it took on the UK distribution of National Lottery good causes income for heritage as the Heritage Lottery Fund (now The National Lottery Heritage Fund).

Lord Rothschild was a passionate supporter of culture and heritage in the UK. He was instrumental in establishing the Heritage Fund’s investment in parks and urban green space, a legacy which remains to this day. During his four years as our founding Chair, he oversaw the distribution of more than £1billion in grants for all types of heritage. The Heritage Fund celebrates its 30th Birthday in 2024 and remains the largest funder for the UK’s heritage.

Our Chair and CEO, Board of Trustees (past and present) and staff offer our deepest condolences to his family.
