National Theatre Future receives Heritage Lottery Fund support

The HLF grant will contribute to the National’s £70million redevelopment project, National Theatre Future.

Lisa Burger, Chief Operating Officer of the National and NT Future Project Director, commented: "We are delighted the Heritage Lottery Fund has made this generous grant, which is a welcome vote of confidence in our plans to conserve and renew Denys Lasdun's 1970s building. The pre-eminent example in Britain of mid-twentieth century modernism, it gained Grade II* listed status in 1994. The theatre now requires significant investment in the fabric of its building; HLF's funding will enable us to create increased public access to the architectural, theatrical and social history of the National Theatre."

Dame Jenny Abramsky, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "The National Theatre is one of the South Bank's most recognisable landmarks which we're delighted to be supporting as it approaches its 50th anniversary. Along with much-needed redevelopment work, imaginative plans to engage visitors with all aspects of this world-class theatre and its archive collection are something we warmly welcome."

Notes to editors

NT Future is a £70m redevelopment programme which will transform the facilities we offer audiences and artists, enhance our relationship with the environment around us and place education firmly at the heart of our mission.

The National opened its doors on the South Bank in 1976. Since then, there have been significant changes to the way we make, experience and learn through theatre. NT Future responds to these changes by opening up our building, allowing audiences closer engagement with the theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Over £63m has now been raised towards the £70m target, thanks to the generosity of the Arts Council, the HLF and a number of individuals, trusts and foundations, and the National’s own earnings from War Horse. National Theatre's NT Future website.
