Launched in November 2011, the Rekindle Kinloss project, a year long programme for 13 to 25 year olds exploring the cultural heritage of Kinloss Abbey funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and run by Moray Art Centre, has helped raise the profile of Kinloss Abbey.
 
Acting as a stage for a group of young people to explore the building’s history and share their findings with the local community. From visits to historical landmarks and learning from key speakers, to gaining archaeological and architectural skills and having a go at filmmaking, Rekindle Kinloss saw the young people of Moray keen to learn about their heritage. Opening on Saturday 13 October and running until 17 November, this brand new exhibition will display participant discoveries and achievements over the past 12 months, showcasing archaeological finds, architectural drawings, maps, paintings and film.

Participant Charlotte Johnson said: “Rekindle Kinloss has provided an opportunity for me to research the history of a local monument whilst learning how to conduct archaeological surveys. It has, furthermore, acted as a basis for group members to organise our own projects, developing ideas and setting/meeting deadlines. In particular, this has allowed us to produce our own short film, filling all the necessary roles ourselves.”

Moray Art Centre Exhibition Manager Gill Bird said: “This exhibition opens a window on to the history of Kinloss Abbey and is testament to the dedication and ingenuity and creativity of the young participants taking part in research, archaeology, design work, drawing and film making. A must-see for anyone interested in Kinloss and the surrounding area.”

skills which will help equip them for the future.”
