Doughnut 2015: The Outer London Festival will see a number of events, stalls and debates exploring their unique characters and future development.

It also gives us the perfect opportunity to shout about their amazing, but often overlooked, heritage.

Keeping with the theme of tasty treats, we’ve put together a list of wonderful heritage projects in our capital’s outer boroughs to suit everyone’s tastes! Even better: all have benefitted from money raised by National Lottery players.

Being closer to nature

Our capital has a wealth of natural heritage and many projects working to protect it, it was hard to choose just a couple! First pick is the Celebrations of Orchards Project which aims to restore 30 orchards across London and train 3,500 people to care for them. The future also looks bright for Walthamstow Wetlands where work has begun to transform the area into London’s largest urban wetland nature reserve.

Exploring creativity

The impressive Orleans House Gallery is full of art relating to Richmond and is set to get even better and more accessible thanks to a transformation project. Or if cinema is more your thing, keep an eye out for Film London’s Kino Van as it tours London’s outer boroughs showing films which have captured London life through the decades. Their latest tour starts this Saturday in Richmond!

Understanding how things work

Ever wondered about the workings behind the sails of a windmill? Or how London gets its water? If so, a visit to Havering’s Upminster Windmill (currently undergoing restoration) and the London Museum of Water and Steam in Hounslow will be right up your street.

Seeing history unfold

Set in picturesque backgrounds, the Honeywood Museum in Sutton sheds light on the Edwardian era while the Bentley Priory Museum takes to the skies for the Battle of Britain story.
