With the recent announcement of the HLF funded CITiZAN project and its nationwide call for archaeological volunteers, it’s a great opportunity to highlight some local opportunities to get digging in Yorkshire this summer to discover local heritage.

During August local projects are offering the chance for people to try their hand at something new and discover something amazing. From prehistoric sites through medieval manor houses to First World War heritage Yorkshire’s archaeological heritage is being unearthed.

Ice Age artefacts in Selby were nearly missed as volunteers investigated Victorian features in the grounds of Monk Fryston Hall. Open days and training days have closed for the season but visit the Monk Fryston Time Team website to find out how to get involved.

Down the road in Cawood, local volunteers are delving into the medieval past, hoping to uncover the de Cawood’s manorial home and find out more about their local fruit-growing heritage. More information about upcoming sessions in August and September can be found on the Cawood Heritage website.

Finally, the Doncaster 1914-18 project will be searching for the lost military training ground and barracks of the local regiment. In preparation there will be a range of hands-on activities, which includes a simulated ‘Dig Pit’ where you can meet the archaeologists on 15 August. Keep an eye on the Doncaster 1914-18 website for when archaeological investigations may begin.

If you are inspired to investigate your local heritage and archaeology get in touch with the Yorkshire and the Humber Development Team.
