Countdown to the opening of V&A Dundee, Scotland’s first design museum

V&A Dundee
V&A Dundee is set to become a place of inspiration, discovery and learning
In just one month’s time, the doors will open to the eagerly anticipated V&A Dundee. The new international centre of design will present the best of Scottish creativity and the finest design from around the world.

The last of 300 amazing objects are currently being brought into the Scottish Design Galleries which will form the heart of the museum; the new café, restaurant and shop are now fitted out in readiness for their first customers; and exhibits, bringing to life the golden age of ocean travel, are being hung and mounted in the first touring exhibition, Ocean Liners: Speed and Style.

The first-ever dedicated design museum in Scotland and the only other Victoria & Albert museum anywhere in the world outside London, V&A Dundee is set to become a place of inspiration, discovery and learning for visitors from across the globe.

And it's thanks to £19.1million of National Lottery funding, including £14.1m from HLF and £5m from Creative Scotland, that this incredible building has taken shape. Designed by internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, V&A Dundee stands at the centre of the £1billion transformation of the Dundee waterfront. With complex geometry inspired by the dramatic cliffs along the east coast of Scotland, the building stretches out into the River Tay – a new landmark reconnecting the city with its historic waterfront.

  • V&A Dundee is an impressive 8,500m² building with 1,650m² of gallery space
  • It has no straight external walls
  • The walls are made up of almost 2,500 pre-cast rough stone panels, weighing up to 3,000kg each and up to 4m wide
  • There are 21 separate wall sections
  • Thirty 60m-deep bore holes help provide direct renewable energy

3D Festival

The museum will open to the public on 15 September with the 3D Festival kicking off the opening weekend in a celebration of design, music and performance.

The free two-day festival begins on Friday 14 September headlined by legendary Scottish rockers, Primal Scream. The band will unveil a new collaboration with contemporary visual artist and former Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie, specially commissioned for the opening.

As well as amazing musical performances, there will be spectacular new dance, design and lighting collaborations, putting the audience and the museum at the heart of the show.
