Burton Constable Stable Block wins Heritage Lottery Fund support
As the first phase of restoration, a selection of the many historic interiors will be restored including stalls and loose boxes, tack rooms, stable master’s sitting room and grooms’ quarters. The Great Barn will continue as home to the skeleton of the Burton Constable Sperm Whale with a new display.
New volunteer facilities, community exhibition and workshop spaces will also be created along with a new visitor entrance route. Interpretation will be provided for a wide range of users, and throughout the conservation and restoration phase of the project public engagement will be encouraged through a series of open-access days. This project aims to increase visitor numbers and provide opportunities for volunteer and community participation and learning for all age groups.
The stable block consists of buildings around two courtyards – one designed to stable riding and carriage horses, the other for farm horses. It was built to the south east of the main Hall in c.1770 to the designs of the architect Timothy Lightoler and in 1842 the large indoor riding school was added.
Dr David Connell, Director of the Burton Constable Foundation, said: "This award provides us with a fantastic opportunity to transform the experience of visitors to Burton Constable and continue with the renaissance of this great house and its surrounding parkland."
Fiona Spiers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “The stable block at Burton Constable Hall is recognised as being of national significance, and this project, once complete, will bring to life the important role that horses played in our social and economic history, while giving lots of people of all ages the chance to get involved in the process."
Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, said: “The Burton Constable Foundation do important work maintaining this historic Hall. It is great news that they have received this HLF funding so visitors to East Yorkshire will be able to see even more of this fantastic house and its grounds, and can learn what makes this area so special.”
