This 3-year project, launched in the 2018 Welsh Year of the Sea, is using pioneering interpretation and events to engage and excite people about life in the seas off the coast of Wales.

The landscape under our seas is just as rich and diverse as that we see every day on the land, but hidden below the waves it is often forgotten or ignored. Out of sight, few people can see the array of species, habitats and geological features essential to keeping our seas healthy and full of life, but they too are part of our collective heritage.

Welsh territorial sea almost doubles the size of Wales and over 35% of the area is covered by Marine Protection Areas.

By helping people understand the beauty and importance of the marine environment the project aims to change people’s attitudes and behaviours, so that they ultimately become marine conservation advocates.

Engaging people in something they can’t easily see is a challenge. By using a variety of engagement methods, a wide variety of people can take part. Formal and informal training for volunteers is being provided, including opportunities to work with researchers via citizen science initiatives.
