Ceredigion Museum has reopened, following a project to transform its operations, resilience and sustainability.

The New Approaches project is the first of a three-phased approach of works for the museum, which Ceredigion County Council is leading on.

The museum sits in the Grade II listed Coliseum Theatre building in Aberystwyth. It contains nationally important collections, including exhibits on Welsh blankets, quilts and costume, seafaring and welsh art.

The initial phase addressed the need to raise the street profile of the museum in order to improve sustainability. Works included the creation of a new street level museum entrance and reception, along with a shop and dedicated café bar. The council also planned to support the delivery of a learning and participation programme to accompany the physical works on the building.

Other initiatives to boost the museum’s profile and encourage greater visitor engagement include:

  • Increasing usage of the Coliseum auditorium for amateur local groups and community performances
  • Developing volunteer programmes in marketing and management skills, as well as heritage-based activities
